EnergyNet, a local company created by Hopkinsville Electric System, has installed a fiber
optic communications system in order to serve its customers better. This
communications system will improve the efficiency of the electric system through
faster outage detection and repair, substation monitoring, and remote switching.
Eventually, the fiber network will allow automated connects/disconnects, meter
reading, real-time pricing, and energy-use management by the consumers of HES.
Additional bandwidth capacity on the system will be used to improve the
communications infrastructure of Hopkinsville by providing wide-bandwidth,
digital connections that are currently not available in Hopkinsville except, on
a very limited basis.
Currently, EnergyNet offers
internet access and point to point voice/data communications. As demand grows,
we will provide other services to the business and consumer markets such as
residential internet access, energy management and access to long distance
carriers like MCI, Sprint, AT&T and Qwest.
