Firewall
Not only are there viruses on the internet, but some individuals actually have the ability to break into your computer electronically over your internet connection. A firewall is a program designed to stop unauthorized access to your computer over your internet connection. Some Windows operating systems (i.e. XP, Vista, 7) have a firewall program included. The firewall may be activated by opening the “Control Panel,” clicking on the “Security” button and turning the firewall on. There are also firewall programs available on the internet for free and for purchase. Before choosing and installing a firewall program, it is highly recommended that you use a search engine (i.e. Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.) to look for reviews and comparisons on currently available programs. Many computer oriented websites (CNet, PC Magazine, PC World, etc.) will have reviews of various programs as well as comparisons that can help you choose the program(s) best for your computer. For further protection, a “hardware” firewall can also be installed. A hardware firewall is typically included in routers and wireless gateways and stops most illicit attempts to access your computer before they reach your computer.
